Cambodia’s education sector has made significant progress over the years. According to UNICEF Cambodia, primary school enrolment has increased to over 97% in 2017. The government sees STEM programs as key to Cambodia’s high-tech future, contributing to their 2050 goal of becoming a high-income country. To this end, Mekun Academy, a tutoring center focused on nurturing young math talents, has a pivotal role to play in realizing this dream.
Mekun Academy has helped students achieve academic success in both Math and Science International Olympiads. Nowadays, the math tutor center has over 50 tutors, who are coaching over 260 students at four locations: Borey Peng Huoth (Boeung Snor), Phnom Penh City Center, Grand Phnom Penh, and Stung Mean Chey, as well as through online classes and home tutoring.
This center has guided its students to win numerous medals and awards in international competitions, including 10 gold, 32 silver, and 40 bronze medals at the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) in July 2024.
Who is behind the Mekun Academy?
Mr. Kimsorng San, a young entrepreneur, educator, and math genius, is the co-founder and school director of Mekun Academy. Born in Kampong Cham province, he won Rank 1 and a gold medal in Grade 12 at the National Mathematics Competition 2019, hosted by the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport (MOEYS).
“I want to see math talents in Cambodia emerge from a very young age, developing strong problem-solving skills and a deep passion for mathematics,” Kimsorng said.
Through dedicated training and mentorship at Mekun Academy, students gain opportunities to excel in international maths competitions, fostering their development in STEM education and inspiring future generations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in Cambodia, and beyond.
